Biosecurity in the citrus and grains industries (Stage 4 and 5 Science and Agriculture)

These units of work are designed to cover outcomes from the NSW Science 7-10 and Agricultural Technology Years 7-10 syllabus and are designed to allow students to develop an understanding of the Australian agricultural industry and the importance of plant biosecurity in the context of integrated pest management for the grains and citrus industries.

The links between agriculture and the role of pest insects are explored and students gain an insight into the taxonomy and classification process of organisms. Students will undertake an insect surveillance exercise and then learn to identify the insects they collect. They will also learn how to record data and take measurements of abiotic factors e.g. weather.

Resources include fully resourced teacher guides with student worksheets and a range of interactive PowerPoint presentations to support learning.

Resource collaborators include NSW Department of Primary Industries, CRC Plant Biosecurity, SARDI R&D and Freshgrowth.
