Judging and Genetics

Excursion for Stage 5 (Years 9-10)

Terms 1 and 3 2021      Cost: $20/student

  1. Students will learn how genetics and stock selection are used in agriculture. Students will learn how modern biotechnology improves Australia’s produce, perform a hands-on DNA extraction, learn about Mendelian genetics and see gel electrophoresis in action.

  2. Hands-on selection, judging and appraisal of beef cattle. Students select animals for specific breeding objectives or markets using objective measurement and subjective appraisal.

  3. Practically investigate Estimated Breeding Values in beef production and the DPI Southern Multi Breed (Genomics) research project.

Excursion for Stage 4 (Years 7-8)

Terms 1 and 3 2021      Cost: $20/student

  1. Students will explore how a dairy farm is a managed environment investigating the innovative and sustainable ways it produces a food – milk.

  2. Creamery tour to demonstrate the improvements that science and technology have made to dairy production. 

  3. Students learn about the science of dairy products. Students explore dairy product market specifications, market chains and milk processing and Food safety issues by completing a rang of experiments surrounding bacterial milk spoilage, colostrum content and immunity and mastitis and somatic cell counts.
